Gapja (甲子) day pillar

A tall tree by winter water: someone who grows by learning

What the Gapja day pillar is like

Gapja puts a straight tree (甲) on midwinter water (子). Water feeds wood, so the ground under this day master is a nourishing one: Direct Resource (정인) sits in the day branch. People with this pillar often feel most settled when they are reading, studying or quietly improving something.

As the first pair of the sixty-pillar cycle, it is drawn to new starts and to building things from nothing. It tends to be polite and measured with others, while holding a firm private sense of what is right. Close friends may feel looked after, or, on a bad day, lectured.

Winter water is cold, and a lot of thinking can delay the first step. Trying something small before every detail is ready usually suits this pillar better than waiting.

The Gapja ilju (day pillar), character by character

Number 1 of the sixty-pillar cycle. The table shows what Halmeoni's calendar engine computes for this pillar.

FactValue
Top character (day master)甲 — a tall, straight tree (yang wood)
Bottom character (day branch)子 — Rat · water · midwinter (about December)
Yin-yangyang (both characters)
Elementswood above, water below
How the two relateThe bottom character feeds the top one: support from the ground up.
Hidden stems (ten gods)壬 Indirect Resource (편인), 癸 Direct Resource (정인)
Ten god of the day branchDirect Resource (정인) — elders who look after you, study, papers
Twelve stagesBath (목욕) — bathing and dressing up: charm, restlessness
Void branches (공망)戌, 亥 — an empty spot: what is hard to hold on to

Hidden stems are the forces tucked inside the bottom character; the last one listed is the strongest. Ten gods describe each character as seen from the top character, the day master, so the same bottom character gets a different name under a different day master. The void branches are the two that have no partner in this pillar's ten-day week; they only matter when they appear elsewhere in a chart.

A day pillar is only two of the eight characters in a chart. People who share it can read very differently once the year, month and hour are added, so take this as entertainment, not as a verdict on who you are.
