How the Daily Fortune Is Made
Explains how the day's stem-branch pair (일진) is set against your chart to read the Ten Gods, Twelve Life Stages, Twelve Spirits and favourable element, and how Halmeoni bundles these into a star rating and a short reading.
The day's pillar (일진): the two characters of the day
Just as years and months have stem-branch names, so does every day. The Sixty-Pair Cycle (60 Gapja) moves forward one place a day, so a day with the same stem-branch pair comes round every 60 days. The stem-branch pair of a day is called the day's pillar (일진, 日辰). For example, October 21, 2026 is a 戊辰 (mu-jin) day, and a week later, October 28, is an 乙亥 (eul-hae) day.
Years and months change at solar terms such as the Start of Spring (입춘) or Gyeongchip (경칩), but days move on to the next stem-branch pair at every midnight, regardless of the solar terms. Halmeoni uses the calendar date of the place where the reader is, and works out the year, month and day pillars of that day at noon. Unlike when it looks at the hour of birth, it makes no longitude correction. This is because the "day" you are reading is a day on the calendar where you live, not the position of the sun. For the time zone it uses what the browser reports, and if that is unknown it takes Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).
Your Day Master and the day's characters: the Ten Gods
The two characters of the day's pillar are read by their relation to your Day Master (일간). The stem is compared directly with the Day Master to set its Ten God, and the branch gets its Ten God from the central one of the energies hidden inside it (the main qi). For example, for a 庚 (gyeong) Day Master, the 戊 of a 戊辰 day is Earth that generates you and has the same yin-yang, so it is Indirect Resource (편인), and the main qi inside 辰 is also 戊, so the branch is Indirect Resource as well.
The theme of the Today card is set by one thing, the Ten God of that day's stem. Each Ten God has a one-sentence mood for the day, and each Ten God also has a set tilt in the star rating. Eating God (식신), Direct Wealth (정재), Direct Officer (정관) and Direct Resource (정인) add one star, and Rob Wealth (겁재), Hurting Officer (상관) and Seven Killings (편관) take one away. Friend (비견), Indirect Wealth (편재) and Indirect Resource leave it as it is. A negative tilt does not mean a bad day. It means the day leans towards things that need attention, such as competition or pressure, so the stars are set a little lower.
| Ten God of the day's stem | Stars | Theme of the Today card |
|---|---|---|
| Friend (비견) | 0 | A day to stand side by side with friends and colleagues |
| Rob Wealth (겁재) | -1 | A day when competition arises and money slips away easily |
| Eating God (식신) | +1 | A day of plenty and ease |
| Hurting Officer (상관) | -1 | A day when words come out sharp and witty |
| Indirect Wealth (편재) | 0 | A day when people come and go and chances open up |
| Direct Wealth (정재) | +1 | A day when steady effort comes back as reward |
| Seven Killings (편관) | -1 | A day when pressure comes in from outside |
| Direct Officer (정관) | +1 | A day when order and recognition favour the sincere |
| Indirect Resource (편인) | 0 | A day of sharp intuition, comfortable alone |
| Direct Resource (정인) | +1 | A day when help comes from elders or a teacher |
The day's Twelve Life Stages and Twelve Spirits
The Twelve Life Stages (12운성) look at which stage your Day Master's energy is at in that day's branch. Halmeoni uses the way in which the yin stems run in reverse (음포태). If the stage is Coming of age (관대), Prime (건록) or Peak (제왕), it adds one line saying it is a day when energy is filling up, and if it is Sickness (병), Death (사), Tomb (묘) or Severance (절), one line saying it is a day to rest. The other five stages get no wording. The Twelve Life Stages do not change the star rating.
The Twelve Spirits (12신살) look at what nickname that day's branch has, taking your animal (the year branch, 연지) as the standard. Nine of them, Earth Spirit (지살), Peach Blossom (년살), Exposure (망신살), General (장성살), Saddle (반안살), Travelling Horse (역마살), Canopy (화개살), Robbery (겁살) and Calamity (재살), have a line that fits the day, while Moon Spirit (월살), Six Harms (육해살) and Heaven (천살) get no line. Even Robbery or Exposure is used only as everyday advice such as "look after your wallet" or "think once more before you speak." The Twelve Spirits do not change the star rating either.
Some places read the Twelve Life Stages by the yang order (양포태, in which yin stems follow the yang stems' course), and some read the Twelve Spirits by the day branch (일지) instead of the animal. Halmeoni reads the Twelve Life Stages by the yin order (음포태) and the day's Twelve Spirits by the animal. If this line comes out differently from another app, this difference is usually the reason.
Days when the favourable element comes in
Every chart has an element that brings it into balance, that is, a favourable element. Halmeoni scores whether the Day Master is strong or weak and then sets the favourable element by balancing by strength (억부). If either the stem or the branch of that day falls in the favourable element, it uses the line "a day when the energy you need comes in" and adds one star. Even if both characters are favourable elements, it adds only one star.
A chart whose strength score comes out in the middle (balanced, 중화) has no favourable element set, so it has no such item. The colour and direction of "Today's luck" under the card come from the first of the favourable elements. If there is no favourable element, it uses the element that is fewest among the eight characters of the chart. Wood is green and east, Fire is red and south, Earth is yellow and close to home, Metal is white and west, and Water is black or navy and north. These colours and directions come from the chart, not from the date, so they are the same every day. Pairing each element with a colour and direction is an easy rendering of the traditional correspondences (the five colours, 오방색, and the five directions, 오방위), and for Earth the centre is replaced by "close to home." It is closer to a small game for changing your mood than a guarantee of luck.
Many schools also look at the seasonal temperature adjustment (조후) when setting the favourable element. Halmeoni's calculation looks only at balancing by strength. So it may differ from the yongsin (용신) given elsewhere.
How the stars are counted
The stars on the Today card start at 3, the items below are added and subtracted, and then the result is set to 1 if it is below 1 and to 5 if it is above 5. The day's pillar is compared with your day pillar (일주) because the day pillar is the place in a chart closest to you yourself.
| Item | Condition | Stars |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Every day | 3 |
| Ten God of the day's stem | Eating God, Direct Wealth, Direct Officer, Direct Resource | +1 |
| Ten God of the day's stem | Rob Wealth, Hurting Officer, Seven Killings | -1 |
| Day's stem and your Day Master | Stem combination (천간합) | +1 |
| Day's stem and your Day Master | Stem clash (천간충) | -1 |
| Day's branch and your day branch | Six harmony (육합) | +1 |
| Day's branch and your day branch | Clash (충) | -1 |
| Favourable element | Day's stem or branch is a favourable element | +1 |
If it is in resentment (원진) with the day branch, the stars stay as they are and only one line, "you may have small collisions with someone close," is written. A half combination (반합), punishment (형) or harm (해) changes neither the stars nor the lines. Relations with the year, month and hour pillars are not put into the stars, and only the relation between branches is handled in a single line. Looking in the order year, month, hour pillar, it uses the first clash it meets if there is a clash, and if there is no clash, one six harmony or half combination.
The short reading on the card is at most three lines. The lines are stacked in the order of combination, clash or resentment with the day pillar, favourable element, relation with the other pillars, Twelve Spirits, and Twelve Life Stages, and only the first three are shown. So on a day with a lot going on with the day pillar, the Twelve Spirits or Twelve Life Stages lines sometimes drop out.
A real example: a man born in Seoul at 00:50 on August 25, 2001
This person's chart is 辛巳 丙申 庚申 丙子, the Day Master is 庚 (Metal), and the animal is 巳 (Snake). The eight characters hold four Metal, three Fire and one Water, with no Wood or Earth. The birth month 申 is the same Metal as the Day Master, so it gets the season's help, and the strength score is 55, on the strong side. In Halmeoni's calculation, 55 and above is strong (신강). The energy helping the Day Master comes mainly from the same Metal (Companions, 비겁), so Halmeoni sets the favourable elements in the order of Fire that restrains it (Officer, 관성), Water that drains it (Output, 식상) and Wood that puts it to work (Wealth, 재성). Today's luck comes from the first, Fire, giving red and south.
For a little over a week from October 21, 2026, this person's Today card comes out as follows. All the values are calculated by code.
| Date | The day's pillar | Ten God of stem | Twelve Life Stage | Twelve Spirit | Favourable element coming in | Stars |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| October 21 | 戊辰 | Indirect Resource | Nurture (양) | Heaven | None | 3 |
| October 22 | 己巳 | Direct Resource | Birth (장생) | Earth Spirit | Fire | 5 |
| October 23 | 庚午 | Friend | Bath (목욕) | Peach Blossom | Fire | 4 |
| October 24 | 辛未 | Rob Wealth | Coming of age | Moon Spirit | None | 2 |
| October 25 | 壬申 | Eating God | Prime | Exposure | Water | 5 |
| October 26 | 癸酉 | Hurting Officer | Peak | General | Water | 3 |
| October 27 | 甲戌 | Indirect Wealth | Decline (쇠) | Saddle | Wood | 3 |
| October 28 | 乙亥 | Direct Wealth | Sickness | Travelling Horse | Wood, Water | 5 |
The stars of the 乙亥 day, October 28, are counted like this. For a 庚 Day Master, 乙 is Wood that you restrain and its yin-yang differs, so it is Direct Wealth, and the stars go from 3 to 4. 乙 and 庚 are a stem combination, so it becomes 5. 乙 is Wood and 亥 is Water, both favourable elements, so it becomes 6, but the stars go only up to 5, so it is set to 5. The day branch 申 and 亥 are in harm (害), and harm does not change the stars.
The short reading is one line for the stem combination, one line saying that Wood and Water energy comes in, and one line saying that the animal 巳 and 亥 clash, so "family elders or old matters may stir." The Travelling Horse and the Twelve Life Stage Sickness of that day each have a line too, but the three lines were already full, so they do not appear on the card.
The 戊辰 day, October 21, is a contrast. 戊 is Indirect Resource, so the stars do not move from 3, and 戊 and 辰 are both Earth, so it is not a favourable element either. 辰 is in a half combination with the day branch 申, but a half combination does not change the stars. From the half combination with the month branch 申, only one line, "things click with the people you work with," is attached, and there is no line to attach for Heaven or for the Twelve Life Stage Nurture.
The specific-day reading
What was explained above is the free Today card that appears every time you look at a chart. When you pick a date yourself and ask for that day's fortune, as in the app's specific-day reading (an AI feature that costs lucky pouches), it does not give a star rating. Instead, it builds a list of facts and hands it to the AI: the year, month and day pillars of that day, the Ten Gods of the stems and branches, the combinations, clashes, punishments, harms and resentment between that day's pillar and your four pillars, the relation of that year's Yearly Luck (세운) to your chart, and, if you chose a gender, your current Luck Cycle (대운). The AI writes it out in plain words based on this list and the summary of the chart. If the person above asked about October 21, the facts would also include that the 丙 of the 2026 丙午 year is in a stem combination with the year stem 辛, and that 午 clashes with the hour branch 子.
How evenly the stars come out
Calculating all 365 days of 2026 for the person above gives 2 stars on 30 days, 3 stars on 152 days, 4 stars on 60 days and 5 stars on 123 days, with no 1-star days. Calculating 30 dates of 2026 for each of 2,000 randomly chosen charts (born 1950–2005, Seoul), 60,000 calculations in all, gave 1 star 3.5%, 2 stars 15.3%, 3 stars 27.2%, 4 stars 27.8% and 5 stars 26.1%. Days when the favourable element comes in were 53.7%. Because the favourable element and the day pillar differ from chart to chart, some people have days with many stars often and some rarely.
How to take it
The day's pillar is the shortest flow in a chart. If the Luck Cycle (대운) is the season and the Yearly Luck (세운) is the weather of that season, the day's pillar is about the wind of one day. A day with few stars is only a day with one more thing to be careful about, and a day with many stars is no promise that things will work out by themselves. Decide an important appointment or a decision involving big money by looking at the matter itself, not at the number of stars, and for health or legal matters, consult an expert in that field.
